Purpose

Sharing and mutual support for service learning offices from different Institutes of Higher Learning

Peer exchange, learning and collaboration among partners

Collectively understanding information and resources useful for service learning practitioners

Specific Objectives and Goals

  1. Create a clearinghouse of service learning resources
  2. Articulate and develop principles / code / guide for good practice
Possible objectives for discussion
  • capacity building for service learning practitioners
  • project on history and landscape of service learning in Singapore?
  • explore student collaborations across institutions
  • Role that government can play in service learning (e.g. a national agenda) and the kinds of resources that can be brought in if there is. Currently, MOE, MCCY and MSF are the three key Ministries most relevant to the field of service learning. (suggested from TP)

Products of the COP and Its Uses

  1. Knowledge Work: Take stock of information and updating the knowledge base through Wiki Pages
    • Collective understanding of the sector is more comprehensive and robust than individual vantage points by themselves
    • Information on needs, community resources and gaps allows strategic planning for partners' own organisations, in response to and coordination with other organisations
    • Partners will get user ids that allow them to directly edit the wiki pages if they want to. This allows the wiki pages to be constantly updated with new information partners think will be pertinent to share with one another.
  2. Collaboration Among Partners
    • Partners have access to one another's contact information, possibly start a LISTSERV or other modes of communication among partners
    • Partners can share resources and collaborate on projects without the need to rely on a central authority (e.g. joint research projects, collective fund-raising, sharing venues or pooling manpower etc)

History of the COP

Felt that service learning was inward looking within own institutions and realised there is opportunity for collaboration

COP Agenda for 2019

How Will the COP be Run

  • Participants will submit agenda items, and rotating Facilitators will host as well as help structure each meeting based on the agenda.
  • Issues selected for discussion will be spread out over 4 main meetings (one per quarter?).

Possible Issues for Discussion

-how to communicate what one another do?

-tension between community needs and student needs.

-community engagement vs service learning

-move towards skills-based, instead of more manual or just engagement work.

-implications also then is connecting with faculty for more faculty-led, skills relevant work. (if student led, just simpler modes of engagement).

-sustainability and long term partnerships, given student cohorts move.

-credit bearing, compulsory or voluntary?

-training and foundations for students so they know how to engage and work with community. -how to curate proper training for students. And problems with scale, especially if compulsory and student body is large (many have moved online)

-Administrative function and place of the service learning office. Under student life, student affairs, or specialised office etc.

Issues for Deliberation and Decision

To ARTICULATE AND CLARIFY: use a form to help them articulate vision, mission, roles, guiding principles, objectives, roles ?

To decide what info, how to share info that is useful for one another
